Logo

Posted a little late but here's my stages to getting my logo!

So we did the logo workshop with the cutting and pasting initials to create a logo..

Brief view of the sheets with the different fonts/sizes/with or without shapes etc.

From this i selected this design and font...

and had a play with digital effects on photoshop to create this...

As simple as it may be, the deisn I've chosen is..

I like it because it reminds me of these...

I loved playing with these as a kid and I think it's a pretty bold design aswell! I think this justifies my choice?

A Net... not Annette

You know when you say a word so many times its meaning disappears and the word doesn't sound like a word anymore?? well thats currently happening to the word net!!

moving on though.. I've experimented with a few net designs myself.. examples below

Pretty simple.. Just a sleeve that would fit over an existing box

Reminds my of the Apple Pie sleeves on Maccy's apple pies!

i thought this one would be a toughy.. but it was pretty simple

Happy meal style box!

BUT from my research into the whole magazine holder thing, none of them are particularly suitable.. but at least a had a dabble!

so for my ACTUAL net...

I've penciled out what I want my 2 nets to look like, to a 1:50 scale (to fit it on the page)

This is the net for the lid (top) and the net for the holder (bottom).

next stage is to create miniture prototypes to check theyre do able!

and here we are

 lid

holder

together

IT WORKS

Brain on - CHECK

Few rough doodles of what my nets are going to look like! ....

Pretty self explanatory.

I've also had to think about how I want to create my nets.
I was pretty stuck until we did the laser cutting tasks which gave me an insight into how we could create nets and I thought it was a really effective way of creating them! BINGO.

Here's the samples I did!

The technician also taught us how to etch which came out with a professional finish, gave me a bit of an idea to create my logo and illustrations with it! But i'd need to create some sample of that myself first....

VOILA

“A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.” ― Douglas Adams

So now I've looked into a couple of Illustrators and in depth looked at where I want to promote myself to, I suppose my next step is too research into WHAT I want to design..

I guess the most logical thing to create would be something magazine related as that would apeal to my audience most..

So here's what I came up with..
A MAGAZINE HOLDER

A few I found on the 'tinternet'

Most of these are pretty complex and jazzy, something I'd love to have a crack at but i guess in the time space and the facilities available I'd have to tone things down a little..

So the one thats stuck out to me was this one..

I know it's pretty minimal but I can twinge it a little to add my own twist, maybe adding a lid to it?

this way i could create the lid with perhaps my logo all over it, and have the illustration and facts on the holder itself!

Next step

FIND THE DIMENSIONS OF THE PRIVATE EYE. wouldn't make sense to have a holder that doesn't fit ... would it.

SO
If my measurements are correct..
279mm x 212mm

are the dimensions my holder needs to possess!

If at first you don't succeed, try try again.. UNTIL YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO

So following the 'monster mesh' failures..

I thought I'd give some other nets a go.
Most of which ALSO refused to provide any instructions. It wasn't till i attempted to build them did i realise the importance of them..

Defeat #1

Defeat #2
UNTIL....

TADAAAAAA

finally an instruction accompanied net!
I take my hat off..

“I like physics, but I love cartoons.” ― Stephen Hawking

Just a couple of other cartoonists who's work intrigue me..

First being Jeff Kinney who creates the cartoons for 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid'. A series of children's books which has also been created into a film.

The cartoons are completely simple and very minimal but I think its creates quite a jolly and childish atmosphere.. I like that.

Next.. Martin Handford, the creator of Where's Wally. Sometimes I think the simpler the better. Nothing beats a simple cartoon with a satisfying thick black marker. And in this case a splash of colour.

I've found all the styles I have looked at seem to have a similar appearance. Simple, linear, minimal detail, says a lot about me right?...

Private Eye

I'm going to keep this short and sweet, straight to the point. As previously discussed, I showed an interest in the political magazine, Private Eye. So funnily enough, I bought a few copies to have a flick through and get a few ideas of what's in the current editions and their relation to current affairs.

I bought the most recent edition, as well as a few editions from previous years to show how they keep up to date with the political affairs at that time.

Obviously, as a student interested in illustration, my eyes are immediately drawn to the comical drawings. I picked out a few from all 4 magazines to give an idea of what they're about and the style in which they're drawn.

I won't lie and pretend I understand whats going on in all these illustrations because I don't, regardless of me reading the entries, my brain doesn't seem to process such intellectual information! (To my dismay)

I do however understand this one. I like the almost sarcastic and hypocritical humour it tries to portray.

I guess this shows a play on words? Either way I like the comical stages.

This is kind of straight to the point in describing the illustrators opinions of the modern day Premiership footballer. Which I won't shy in agreeing with.

Summed up, in a sentence and a picture, the extortionate prices of gas and electricity.

Clearly making a joke out of Pippa Middleton's maximised asset at the Royal Wedding.

NEXT STEP!

have a think of the current political issues and create doodles from these...

VOILA

My ideas regarding current political issues..

Just to add the doodles in a bit!
