ROUTE

so from what I can gather from the tour map, the route they took is as follows..

Washington
Oregon
California
Arizona
Colorado
Indiana
Kentucky
Tennesse
Alabama
Georgia
North Carolina
Virginia
Vermont
Pennsylvania
New York
Ohio
Michigan
Wisconsin
Minnesota

(excluding the Canadian regions)

Following this I plan to develop ideas related to each State. Eg new york would have an Empire State Building pop up..

With the animation only being 30 seconds I'm going to find it hard to create a pop up for each. So I plan on developing ideas for all then selecting the most iconic ones for the actual animation.

A little inspiration!

So whilst having a browse on the holy f**k official website, I came across this page..

They have an image inserted of a map of the USA with a hand drawn route of their tour.

(bigger image)

My initial idea when seeing this, was to create this route as an animation!
so maybe use an animated tour bus that moves around the map following the route given.

maybe at each major stop have a pop up of something significant from each place?

MY TURN 3

JUST ONE MORE GO ...

This time again i wanted to give the illustration only animation.
The storyboard goes that the snail slithers up to his 'girlfriend' snail and the end up holding hands. simple but cute!

MY TURN 2

I enjoyed doing the cut out movement of the snail and incorporating it with real life,so i wanted to try one that was just illustrated.

I chose to create a stick woman tripping over a stone.

Here's what a came up with pre-after effects...

I think I got the feeting wrong but it's just development right!

MY TURN

I wanted to have a go at some stop motion experiments. First of all i made a cut out illustration of a snail. My idea was to create a small animation of the snail crawling across the keyboard. Here's the original images..

Hopefully when I insert them into after effects it will come out right!

MORPH

I was having a flick through different ways of presenting animation and the idea of morph sprung to mind. So I had a brief look through youtube at different morph animations/artists on there.

This traditional animation was done using blue pencil on a light box - about two days of nonstop work drawing frame after frame. Total frame count was around 200.

The animation is intended to represent Singapore and make the different aspects morph into each other.

This clip really amazes me. The patience that must have gone into each frame is astonishing. It took me a while to work out how it was created and I'm still a little unsure but I think I have the general idea.

This one has used very simple drawings yet when connected to gether to created the morph it becomes really complex and quite impressive.

HOLY F**K

I thought it would be beneficial to research into the background of the artist who created the track.

I struggled to find it on the internet with just the track name so I used an app on my phone to find it..

From this I got the artist so was much easier to research into the band/song more.

Holy Fuck are a Canadian electronica band from Toronto. They were a part of Dependent Music, a music label and artist collective that began in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 2004 until its closing. They are now a part of the Young Turks label.

The band uses live instrumentation and miscellaneous instruments and non-instruments (including a 35 mm film synchronizer, toy keyboards and toy phaser guns) to achieve electronic-sounding effects without the use of laptops or programmed backing tracks. According to Pitchfork Media, "The band was formed with the intent of creating the equivalent of modern electronic music without actually using the techniques—looping, splicing, programming and the like—of that music."

I found the track on youtube which had a link to their website..

On here there's quite a lot of art, on the website itself and some quite iconic images on their merchandise. I think it would be beneficial to develop ideas based on these to find inspiration.

This is one of the most iconic images they tend to have on most merchandise..

Taaaaake Ooooooon Meeeeeeee

ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SONGS OF ALL TIMES
with a very iconic music video.

With budget of 100,000 British pounds, the video had a two-day shoot and required extensive post-production for its animation. The cartooning process used in the video is called rotoscoping, a method originated by animation pioneer Max Fleischer in 1915. The technique involves using a rotoscope machine that allows an animator to draw over live action film, resulting in the movement in the cartooning being more fluid and lifelike - today the technique is easily done on a computer by animators. In the "Take on Me" video, the process is seamless as the two leads interact, in and out of animation.

I like the way the animation aspect is just basic pencil in black and white and the cartoons themselves are quite minimal yet they depict the two characters in detail.

Who framed Roger Rabbit?

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a 1988 American fantasy comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman. The film combines live action and animation, and is based on Gary K. Wolf's novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit? which depicts a world in which cartoon characters interact directly with human beings.

Zemeckis was hired to direct the live-action scenes with Canadian animator Richard Williams supervising the animation sequences. Production was moved from Los Angeles to elstree Studios in England to accommodate Williams and his group of animators.

I really like the idea of combining live action with animation, it does seem like a complex process and will have to undergo a lot more research if I wanted to pursue this route.

Motion Lecture

Todays lecture gave me a better insight to the different aspects of animation and ways of creating movement. Things to take into consideration are colour change, depth, timing, rotation, scale, shape, transparency and I'm sure several more multiples of change!

I'm still unsure of any initial ideas regarding an actual narrative but I think my next step is to research current/past animators to give an idea of what kind of animation I'd b interested in developing.

Workshop - Cell Animation

Todays workshop was really tricky.

I understood the whole concept of cell animation but when put into groups it got complex.
To rely on someone elses previous tween before starting mine was quite tricky.
I did how ever enjoy working out the spacing between movements in each frame.

These were just some original sketches of development for how the motif could be moved and created into its own character. The top left drawing is the original logo, you can see how my idea develops where the ball splits into two then take it in turns to bounce up and down before joining back to one ball.

These sketches are from the culmination of ideas within my group. We chose to incorporate a 2nd logo that resembled the 'snake' game from Nokia phones. The idea is that the 2nd logo unravels into a snake look-a-like and moves towards the bouncing ball and consumes it.

The final storyboard we created of the animation is above. We divided the 12 fames up so each group member had 2 frames to complte each with 24 slides.

“Animation can explain whatever the mind of man can conceive. This facility makes it the most versatile and explicit means of communication yet devised for quick mass appreciation.” - Walt Disney Company

PRINT TO PIXEL

new project.. not 100% sure what to make of it yet, I've never had the chance in previous years to use this medium.

After listening to my music "the pulse", I'm going to have a brainstorm of ideas of feelings/emotions/things that come to mind when listening to it, hopefully to give me some inspiration for where to start.

ps here's the track..

It sounds out of control and a bit sci-fi esque. It doesn't particularly remind me of a literal pulse, it's too rocky and roll for that.

FINITO!!

So everything was set to go!

I did a couple of miniature run throughs to make sure it worked.. and it did!

UNTIL

I did the scale sized one and found the holder was too big for the lid...
So had to start fresh.. at least I got plenty of practice.. to my excitement.

SO HERE'S THE FINAL THING!

WINNING.
